OMG UTA BARTH

Speaking of pictorialists…
Uta Barth is a German born, American-based contemporary photographer who has been a favorite of mine. Her work is of still life, and is similar to an expressionist painting. Barth does not focus on a single subject, instead she often out-of-focuses on recognizable entities. Barth’s is able to speak to a broad audience of transient beauty that is found in accessible landscapes. The simplistic images bring to attention the light, texture, and space, and focus on peripheral, or marginal perceptions that often remain unnoticed.
Barth’s work is engrossing because of the active role the audience plays when viewing her work. Her objective is to confuse, to subtly compel a viewer to “sort things out.” It is in doing so that a viewer can really find a connection with themselves and each piece.
I feel compelled myself by her work because it encompasses so many aspects of captivation. It evokes memory, emptiness, or a sense of longing, minimalism (in photography, hectic), expressionism, confusion using peripheral perspectives; what should be the background of an image is the entire image (an interesting foundation to base a photographic image on).
In short, I love her. And I hope that you do too.
Here is an awesome interview she did that if you're interested, you should read.
