Big First Friday!

If you're in Denver tonight, bring a stopwatch something motorized, because there's almost too many art shows to take in on one evening--Almost. By local, here's the breakdown. Rhino District Visionary illustrator Alex Pardee shows his creepy cute creatures at Andenken which includes a site specific installation and a host of ghoulish inkings. Head over to Hinterland to check out Down With The Sickness, a group exhibit exploring the neon now as embodied by Buddy Croissant, Travis Egedy, Sterling Crisping, Justin Beard and Drew Englander. As if he wasn't busy enough releasing a new album this week, and curating the Hinterland show, Egedy and his ...Read more

The Dead Weather at the Ogden

The Dead Weather is one of the best new bands I have heard in a long long time. Comprised of Jack White (White Stripes, Raconteurs), Alison Mosshart (the Kills, Discount), Jack Lawrence (the Greenhornes, Raconteurs), and Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) this is a without a doubt a modern super group, and a side project nonetheless! The Dead Weather will be playing the Ogden Theatre August 17th at 8:00. Tickets are about $30, and while pricey, past shows have won critical acclaim, and from what I hear, are definitely worth the money. For more dates and info on their latest album, Horehound, visit www.thedeadweather.com. For tickets, www.ogdentheater.net....Read more

Saturday Night Show at The Fox

Hello. My name is Get in the car, Helen. Before walking in on the woman I loved while she was in bed with this douchebag named Craig, I didn’t blog all that much. Not ever, really. But now, after walking in on previously mentioned woman in previously mentioned bed with previously mentioned douchebag, and after having had said woman leave me for said douchebag, I blog all the fucking time. I’ll be doing some of that blogging for Illiterate now. Blog #1 is an event announcement. HoneyHoney will be performing Saturday July 18th at the Fox Theater in Boulder CO. I haven’t actually heard any of their music yet, but I have heard nice things that have been said about it. ...Read more
Sonic Youth Comes to Denver

Touring for over 25 years, the iconic shoegaze band Sonic Youth is, yet again, on another North American tour. Making their rounds to Denver at the end of the month, this show is one not to be missed. Since most of the members are in their fifties, the chance of more tours in the future is diminishing greatly, so the opportunity to see them live this go around should not be passed by. The best part? Tickets are $30. The other best part? They still have the edge they were famous for in the 80’s. Playing at the Ogden with them Friday, July 31st is Michigan’s Awesome Color (www.myspace.com/awesomecolor). For more information about the show check out www.ogdentheater.net and to lea...Read more
