Saturday Art Opening: Scot Lefavor's See Change

Scot Lefavor aka Faives, will be unveiling new work at his upcoming solo show this Saturday at Andenken Gallery in Denver. His recognizable superflat graphic paintings initially inspire visions of 1950's "Everything's A-Ok honey, now get into the bomb shelter, right after you fill my high-ball and light my lucky"advertising. However, amidst this nuclear utopia, Lefavor makes it obvious that he's clearly not the well mannered Wally Cleaver. More a modern day Eddie Hascal. he slyly, and not always so subtely, inserts his own agenda to the two-toned characters, and nostalgic lettering, creating a contrast between his contemporary middle finger, and the big thumbs-up rammed up the ass of a...Read more
Big First Friday!

If you're in Denver tonight, bring a stopwatch something motorized, because there's almost too many art shows to take in on one evening--Almost. By local, here's the breakdown. Rhino District Visionary illustrator Alex Pardee shows his creepy cute creatures at Andenken which includes a site specific installation and a host of ghoulish inkings. Head over to Hinterland to check out Down With The Sickness, a group exhibit exploring the neon now as embodied by Buddy Croissant, Travis Egedy, Sterling Crisping, Justin Beard and Drew Englander. As if he wasn't busy enough releasing a new album this week, and curating the Hinterland show, Egedy and his ...Read more

Date Farmers show their stuff at Andenken

Carlos Ramirez and Armando Lerma are the art duo known as the Date Farmers. Collaborating together since 1998 the two forwent individual recognition for a collecitve, familial identity. American Born Chicanos, the Dater Farmers draw upon their Mexican heritage as well as contemporary California dreams and realities to create embattled landscapes where cultures collide. The result? A collection of problematic paintings and collages where Graffiti meets traditional street mural; revolutionary propaganda meets corporate advertising, hand painted signs meet handmade prison ink. In their contrast the invariable question of the displaced native arises: Oppose or assimilate and to w...Read more

Koralie at Andenken

Get to Andenken Gallery tomorrow as it welcomes the beautiful geishas of Koralie. Everytime I look at this french artist's work I see new references and subtleties. Primarily considered "geisha dolls" her paintings and sculpture also draw from Russian dolls, Indian jewels, and even eighteenth century French hair. I am usually skeptical about symmetry in art but she applies it with such elegance and variation that it totally works without question and she is often able to break from this formula. Expect to see handcrafted dolls, tapestries, and canvas work but im personally hoping for a wheatpaste or two around town. if you've never been to Andenken its at 2990 larimer st. in Denver...Read more

In anticipation of Friday arting, go to the Lab at Belmar for Feminism and Co.'s "Bitch: The History and Politics of a Word." This is the first in the weekly series program and tonight features Melinda Barlow, "bitch extraordinaire and professor ...Read more
