Saturday Art Opening: Scot Lefavor's See Change

Saturday Art Opening: Scot Lefavor

Scot Lefavor aka Faives, will be unveiling new work at his upcoming solo show this Saturday at Andenken Gallery in Denver. His recognizable superflat graphic paintings initially inspire visions of 1950's "Everything's A-Ok honey, now get into the bomb shelter, right after you fill my high-ball and light my lucky"advertising. However, amidst this nuclear utopia, Lefavor makes it obvious that he's clearly not the well mannered Wally Cleaver. More a modern day Eddie Hascal. he slyly, and not always so subtely,  inserts his own agenda to the two-toned characters, and nostalgic lettering, creating a contrast between his contemporary middle finger, and the big thumbs-up rammed up the ass of a...Read more

Friday Art Opening: Max Kauffman's Ramshackle Deluxe

Friday Art Opening: Max Kauffman

One of my favorite Denver artists, Max Kauffman has a  show opening Friday at street artist/graffiti writer Jolt's warehouse space, the Guerilla Garden (38th Ave and Steele). The title of the show Ramshackle Deluxe may have something do with the fact that Max, in addition to displaying his fantastic watercolor illustrations, has, with the help of his accomplice, referred to only as Brandon, constructed a three dimensional "tape shack", which Max describes in the following statement:   "The install focuses on the theme of a city built out of the ashes and relics of another time- cobbled doors, fence posts, tables and other wood is cobbled together to form a city striving to surviv...Read more

Art Opening: Barnaby Furnas

Art Opening: Barnaby Furnas

Hey kids do you like violence? How about bloody carnage on canvas? Tonight head over to the MCA to view the visceral paintings of Barnaby Furnas, the 31 year old New York artist who creates mural sized battles between the figurative and abstract. Furnas' first major notoriety came for ecstatic battle scenes,  gory and celebratory shootouts between variously exploding American civil war era icons, such as  Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. His most recent paintings have done away with any human reference aside from that most vital fluid of life, blood. These large-scale paintings, which often stretch the entirety of a room and can take weeks' just to stretch the c...Read more

Friday Night Movie at Time Warp

Friday Night Movie at Time Warp

This Friday, September 18, as part of their month-long celebration of 25 Years in a consecutive row of being in business, Time Warp Comics will be hosting Customer Appreciation Movie Night!   You’re not going to want to miss this one. I’m not sure what movie they’re playing (at the time of this blogging it’s still all top secret/hasn’t been announced) (ed note: it's Star Wars) and I’m not sure what time it starts (ed note: 7;00 p.m.), all I know is that if comic shop owner and genre -guru Wayne’s running the show,  it has to be good. Ordinarily I lock myself in my apartment on Friday nights, still semi-hungover after co-h...Read more

CMYK+RGB Round 3

CMYK+RGB Round 3

The third photographer to capture moments at CMYK+RGB, Raul San Miguel, used levity to reveal the true expression the people he encountered throughout the evening. San Miguel asked his subjects to jump while he snaped them mid air. Like Phillipe Halsman discovered celebrities and dignitaries half a century ago, when hopping "the mask falls so that the real person appears." If that's the case then it looks like we're all a bunch of silly characters.                                                  ...Read more

Aural Pleasure

Aural Pleasure

After the overwhelming positive response we received from musicians and audience members after Illiterate's first music centered event: Denver Does Denver, back in June, we realized that the whole experience was pretty damn arousing. And with anything that feels good, we couldn't help but want to do it more often.  And so, from now on the last Saturday of every month, Illiterate will be hosting a regular night of Aural Pleasure at Old Curtis Street Bar where our favorite bands and DJ's play the music we (and hopefully you) want to hear. Come check out the first installment in this series this Saturday August 29th as Bitch Yes! Jonathan +Bpro and DJ Peter Black get the dance floor convul...Read more
